Lauren said in her interview about Lie with me, I love her. [Nov. 17th, 2006|02:56 am]

Lie with Me is about a girl who can't connect emotionally, only physically... a sexually voracious young woman who connects with men through brief physical/sexual encounters.

Racy. Raw. Voyeuristic. Sexy.

LLS interview:

"It's controversial, but it's also something everyone will understand," she notes. "It's about a woman who is not so comfortable with the emotional side of relationships, but is so good with the physical, sexual side. Taking the role wasn't about the 'naked chick' quality - it's about showing strong, sexual women."

"I couldn't care less if a movie makes a huge profit. I choose my roles based on whether the script terrifies me," Smith says.

Lie Wit Me, Played by Lauren [Nov. 17th, 2006|02:53 am]

To prepare for her role in Lie With Me, Lauren Lee Smith travelled to Toronto a month early to wander the streets and get a feel for the city. The new film, directed by Clement Virgo, opens today at Granville Cinemas.

Erotic Lie With Me eyes high art as an ideal

Lauren Lee Smith was absolutely terrified the first time she read through the script for Lie With Me.

Clement Virgo's film presented an excellent opportunity for the young Vancouver actress. It was also a big gamble - for much of the time her character, Leila, is naked on screen.

"I was a little bit concerned at first," admits Smith, 24. "I had never done any nudity before let alone a big love scene. Ultimately I think to be a really good actor you have to let all of your guards down and be raw and naked whether it's physically, emotionally, mentally or whatever. I hadn't had the opportunity to do that yet so I just knew that I had to get over my fears and insecurities."

Being a huge fan of the book the film is based on didn't hurt either. Virgo adapted Lie With Me from the novel of the same name written by his wife, Tamara Faith Berger. The story, saturated in sexual energy and straddling a blurred line between art and pornography, could only have been produced by someone intimately involved with the sex industry. Berger served several years in the trenches writing raunch for publications such as Sticky Buns, Buttime Stories and Bump & Grind. The woman knows her stuff.

Lie With Me rejects typical pornographic production techniques simply by narrating everything from a woman's point of view. Berger, who once wrote an academic paper called The Moral Pornographer, is savvy enough not to fall into the cliches of genre writing and raises her game to the level of Georges Bataille and other grandmasters of sin and skin esthetics. On purely literary terms the book could not be ignored and tapped an audience eager for something different.

"I was working in Toronto and a girlfriend passed along the book to me," says Smith. "She had received it from her girlfriend and we all just adored the book. A couple of years later I was in Los Angeles and my agent sent me the script and I was like 'Oh my God, this is the book.' Not only that but Clement is directing it and I know him."

Smith appears regularly on The L Word series, produced locally for Showtime, and worked on one episode with Virgo as director. However when she made her audition tape for Lie With Me she had no idea what the outcome would be.

The production team had been searching for their central character Leila for some time before Smith's tape arrived. Once Virgo saw the audition he called off the search and approached Smith to play opposite another rising young star, Eric Balfour, known for his work on 24, Six Feet Under and The O.C.

From the outset Smith had complete confidence in Virgo as a director. "He's very clear in what he wants and he's good at giving direction to actors. I put my trust in him 100 per cent which I kind of had to do."

To prepare for her role Virgo recommended Smith study several films that could help shape her conceptual approach to Lie With Me. She got copies of Hedy Lamarr in Extase, Samantha Morton in Morvern Callar, Maria Schneider in Last Tango in Paris and several films starring Isabelle Huppert. "She's now my idol," says Smith. "After I saw Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher I was hooked. To me she's one of the most beautifully striking women I've ever seen. She's so interesting to watch and she can do so much without doing a lot."

Note that all of the films Smith studied were made in Europe. Historically North American culture has had a thing about the representation of sexuality and gone to great lengths to avoid the subject all together. Like it or not Lie With Me aims to change that.

Perhaps because of its aggressive nature the film is much lighter in tone than the novel it is based on. Virgo packages the story as a modern take on romance with sunny Toronto acting as a backdrop. The film's effervescence is in stark contrast to another film Virgo references in his work - In the Mood For Love - Wong Kar-Wai's brilliant tone poem to Hong Kong. Lie With Me represents another side of eros shot in Super 16 on the streets of Toronto in June 2004. "I think Clement did an amazing job of showcasing Toronto," says Smith. "I've certainly never seen Toronto in such a beautiful, sexy way."

Berger was around the set for the first week of the month-long shoot, according to Smith, but for the most part she stayed in the background and let Virgo realize his vision of her material. "We had about a week of rehearsals beforehand," says Smith. "But other than that there was nothing specific as far as preparation goes. I went to Toronto about a month before we started shooting and spent a month completely alone wandering around Toronto and getting a feel for the city. That's what I did to prepare - I shut everyone out for a month."

The film relies heavily on the chemistry between the two lead actors to succeed as a love story. "Once I'd read with Eric I knew it was going to be a breeze," says Smith. "It would have been an entirely different film without him. We really had to put our trust in each other and become very close, very quickly. He made that really easy and I felt really safe with him. About a week before shooting during the rehearsals Clement and Eric and I made a pact that we would make this as honest and real as possible within our boundaries and I think we did."

Virgo wanted a spontaneity between the actors even though their actions were heavily choreographed. For the most part they stuck to the script but there was also room for improvisation within the set scenes, says Smith. "We would block everything out precisely to the dot and then make sure everyone was comfortable with what we were going to do. From there it was really letting us react (to the situation) and we had freedom within that."

Shooting in Super 16 gave Virgo the flexibility to capture the interaction with a cin‚ma v‚rit‚ feel. There is nothing objective in his approach to the story and we are meant to experience it through the eyes of Leila. The film actually opens with the camera trained on one of her eyes and then pans out. "Pretty much all of the scenes are these odd close ups to keep the whole thing in her space, in her mind - seeing the world through her eyes."

The opening sequence is an homage to Georges Bataille's erotic classic Histoire de l'oeil (The Story of the Eye, first published in 1928). Virgo intentionally distances his project from traditional pornography by giving everything names. His film has a rich subtext which operates on many levels.

Lie With Me received its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. "I was really nervous," says Smith. "I hadn't seen the film yet and I definitely thought that I would have to show up with my dukes up and be ready to defend myself. But women came up to me afterwards to say they wish this story had been told before. Women really identify with the character. It's not for the squeamish but for the most part we've been getting a really amazing reaction from people."

Since making Lie With Me last year Smith has gone onto work in as yet unreleased films with Tony Goldwyn (the Last Kiss) and Terry Zwigoff (Art School Confidential) as well as continuing her regular stint on The L Word. The series is wrapping up its third season next month.

As Lie With Me gets set to open nationwide today Smith looks back on the film as a great experience. "It was a really quick shoot and the most crazy, wonderful time that I've ever had. Eric and Clement were amazing - we were so close during that time. We were all in our own little bubble. I remember a couple of days after shooting I slept for about two days and then when I finally woke up I was like, 'Oh my God, what just happened? Where did those four weeks go? Who Am I?' "

Lauren Lee Smith: Vancouver Sun. *This excerpt was posted by Acidburn on Lauren Lee Smith's official forum before that forum disappeared.

Acidburn wrote: It's an interview from the Vancouver Sun with Lauren Lee Smith from January 17 2004. There is no link - believe it or not I paid to download so I am just going to copy the parts pertaining to TLW. Some comments are quite revealing with regard to the ongoing speculation about reshoots and the mysterious methods of the writers. IMHO

(from interview): When her role on Showtime's The L Word wrapped and she hadn't been asked to do a love scene, LLS thought she'd passed under the radar. "I did my six episodes and I thought I was done. Then I got a phone call saying, 'Oh, you have another scene. We decided to write it in because we need to put this in the dynamic of your character', blah, blah, blah. And I just knew. Cause I thought I got off so easy - I was like, Yeah! I'm the only one who didn't have to get naked."

Lee had signed a nudity waiver for the show, along with the rest of the cast -Beals, Grier, Lombard, Daniels, Moennig, Holoman, Heily and Kirshner.

The scene is short, discreet and "it was shot very funny," says Smith. "Our characters are sort of like the comic relief of the show, we're the light, goofy, silly, in-love couple. So it wasn't this full-on passionate thing."

Like most of the cast, both Smith and Daniels are heterosexual. "We decided, let's just do this, let's make it real and not make it weird in any way. And as strange as this may sound, I'm kind of, in a way glad that the first time was with a woman, (Smith collapses in a fit of giggles), because... I think with a guy it would have been almost more uncomfortable, because by the time we did it, she (Daniels) and I were really good friends."

Neil and Christy.com: Lauren Lee Smith interview

An Exclusive Interview with Neil and Christy

Wherein we learn all about swooning, kissing, honeymooning and all the other juicy details from our favorite fictional couple as reported by the two people who know them best, Stewart Finlay-McLennan & Lauren Lee Smith.

Tell us about your first meeting. What did you learn about each other then and how did you feel?

LAUREN: The first time we met was at the network when they wanted to see how we looked together. Randall Batinkoff was also invited but was out of town doing "Touched By An Angel" and had not yet decided if he wanted to return as David. I was extremely nervous because I was not only reading for Jeff Sagansky, but I was doing a scene with the original Doctor MacNeill. As it turned out, Stewart was just as nervous as I was and we now joke about it because neither of us were acting like ourselves. There we were, total strangers, reading the passionate "I'm not a monk" scene in an office filled with producers and executives. It was really uncomfortable.

The next time I saw Stewart was at the script read-through in Vancouver many weeks later, and we both had a good laugh and apologized for our strange behavior.

STEWART: We were both under tremendous pressure at that meeting. In reality, the whole thing was mostly a blur to me. We were asked to do a reading together. We did the scene, and I knew that reading was really important. I knew basically for me that the job was at stake, and I felt it was going to come down to those two minutes of that reading. But once I was in Mac, I was fine and it was over before I knew it, but it was a very hard thing to do for both of us I feel.

I do know that we were both happy that it was all over. I think she said to me she finally got to do the scene with the person she felt like she should be doing it with. While doing the scene with her, I felt good about the experience because I knew there was someone on the other side of the room who could do this with me. Lauren did just fine. I felt an energy coming out of her. I was hopeful on many levels as I sensed that she definitely had the ability to play this character, and if I did get this job back that was important to me to know that. It was a very small opportunity for me to get to know her, but really what I saw at that meeting wasn't the Lauren I grew to know and love in Canada. We were both too traumatized at that moment.

Lauren, do you think the difference in MacNeill's and Christy's ages ever comes into play in their relationship?

LAUREN: No, it doesn't. Christy has had many issues with Neil, but I don't believe that age ever came into it.

What about you personally, Lauren, would you at 20 have a relationship with a guy 15-20 years older than you? Why or why not?

LAUREN: I think I would. Love is not age-based. It's based on your heart and who you both are as people. If I met someone who connected with me on those levels I can't imagine caring about his age or mine.

Who do you feel is more of a romantic at heart, Christy or MacNeill? How would you answer this question if I had asked this about you compared to Stewart instead of Christy compared to MacNeill?

LAUREN: Christy is probably more romantic than Neil. And I'm most certainly more romantic than any man I've met to date. I have no way of knowing how romantic Stewart might be... but who knows?

What do you think is so appealing about MacNeill to Christy? What about to you, Lauren?

LAUREN: Neil is unlike anyone Christy has ever known. He is brooding and mysterious. He's also extremely masculine in a way that her friends in Asheville probably aren't. On the other hand, I like MacNeill's intelligence and strength.

What do you think is so appealing about Christy to MacNeill?

LAUREN: Well, first we know from the original series that in some ways she reminds him of Margaret. Beyond that, I think he likes her determination and probably her spirituality, which he longs for in himself.

Which one of you is the most in real life like your character...is it you, Lauren, like Christy or is it Stewart like MacNeill?

LAUREN: No contest. Stewart IS Dr. MacNeill.

Lauren, What is the most Christy-like thing you have ever personally done?

LAUREN: Well, there are a number of ways I feel that I'm like her but the one that probably hits closest to home is that I was once torn between my feelings for two guys. Like David and Neil, they each had qualities that appealed to me. This dragged on for a while but unlike Christy I came to my senses and moved on. Fortunately, I was then hired to play Christy and was able to immerse myself in my work.

What is it about Christy that you feel caused two such different men to fall in love with her?

LAUREN: Kellie Martin once had a scene where she accused either Neil or David with being attracted to her because she was the only available female around. While that's not very kind to their characters, there's probably some truth to it. Christy is definitely more like them than most of the local mountain women are. But I also feel that they are both good and caring men who like those same qualities in her.

So, if Christy were your best friend or sister, what advice would you give her about handling these two men and also about deciding which man to choose?

LAUREN: If she were my friend I'd say "Shut up and make up your mind, already!" Seriously, I'd give her the same advice that people gave me. "Don't over-think it, follow your heart."

Have you read much of the Christy fan fiction on the web?

LAUREN: I've seen a couple, but thought it was better not to become confused by what other people wanted the character to feel. I had to stick with the book and the scripts written for these movies.

Does it surprise you that starting back with the fans of the original series and continuing today, more than 90% of it pairs up Christy with MacNeill. Why do you think this is so?

LAUREN: Yes, I was very surprised. As an actor I can only relate to the men I've worked with. James and Stewart are equally compelling and bring so much to the love triangle. As a fan of the book and series, I understand why Neil's character is a popular choice for Christy but I think that David, as a work-in- progress for Christy, is also very appealing.

You know what all the excitement is over on this web site right? Everyone comes here to get their fill of swooning for the day. And let me tell you we can find the most minutiae to swoon over. It is great fun and has its hilarious moments! So first tell us what is your definition of swooning?

LAUREN: Okay... for me swooning is serious inability to function in any way. We're talking staring at a man strangely, mumbling incoherently and pretty much acting like nobody any normal guy would want to spend time with.

How often does MacNeill make Christy swoon?

LAUREN: Not often because I think she's spent a lot of time fighting those reactions. However, deep down I think she's swooning most of the time she's with him.

How often do you think Christy affects MacNeill in the same way?

LAUREN: Most of the time. Let's face it, Neil's been alone for a long, long time...

Describe the kind of things he/she does that makes the other react in such a way.

LAUREN: MacNeill is always questioning Christy and judging her, which makes her heart race. I think that because Christy is with David so much and basically unavailable to MacNeill, he's jealous and unable to do anything about it.

What is your favorite swoony moment between MacNeill and Christy?

LAUREN: Whenever the two of them are alone, like the barn in RTCG, the chemistry between them is very evident. That was a swoon for me. Since much of the mini-series is about Christy's decision, there are a lot of scenes like that. But I can't tell you anything more. Sorry.

Is MacNeill a good kisser? Why do you say this?

LAUREN: You'll have to ask Christy that question. As for me, I can tell you that the actor who plays MacNeill is a veteran kisser who brings years of research and training to his work. He is very convincing.

For the sake of this discussion, let's say that Christy is to marry MacNeill and PAX springs for the couple to have a honeymoon trip. Where would you like them to go? Why do you say that?

LAUREN: I'd like to go to Hawaii. It's time that Neil learned to surf.

If MacNeill and Christy get married, do you think that they will argue much when married?

LAUREN: Absolutely. I mean, the man must be tamed!

Tell me what you predict their first argument as a married couple will be about.

LAUREN: "Pick up your socks... take out the trash... and stop snoring!"

And which one of them do you think will more than likely be the one who tries to make up first?

LAUREN: Neil. Remember, he's been alone a long, long time...

If Christy and MacNeill marry, what do think is the first thing she will want to do to MacNeill's cabin to make it habitable to her? Or do you think she will just try to adjust to it as is?

LAUREN: No question. The man needs some serious lace curtains and pastels. Light wouldn't be bad, either. And let's get rid of all the hunting and fishing stuff, too. And then maybe some nice new carpeting. And a dishwasher... washer/dryer... and a microwave. Oh, and I must have my latte in the morning, so a cappuccino machine would be nice. But other than that, with the possible exception of a new hot tub (wink, wink) I don't envision many other changes.

With Christy married, will it be easier or harder to come back in a new series or new movies this year and play this character, why or why not.

LAUREN: I'm not sure that "easier" is the right word, but there is certainly a lot to explore. It would be so much fun to start a whole new adventure.

What about based on whom she marries, does that make it more or less difficult? In other words, how does the dynamic change depending on which man she marries?

LAUREN: Being married will make a lot of difference. The dynamics of the triangle are bound to become more severe. One man will have a broken heart and Christy is bound to feel guilty for doing that to him. If she marries Neil, then her work at the mission school near David would be especially painful.

What did you learn about yourself by playing this challenging role?

LAUREN: I learned that I'm stronger than I thought I was.

If you never have the opportunity to play this character again, what is the one thing you would miss the most about the role? What is the thing you would miss the least?

LAUREN: According to some people, I'd probably miss the hot tub most. In reality I would miss working with that amazing ensemble of actors. And I would miss the chance to see where the story goes. I won't miss the corset, the mud, the bugs or the bizarre assumptions about my social life on the forum.

I am sure you have read/heard all the comments about the two of you (Lauren & Stewart) having such great chemistry together. Can you define what it is that people see who say this and tell us why you think this is so?

LAUREN: Stewart and I get along really well and bring the best out of each other on screen. The same goes for James and me. Some people just click, and I am amazingly lucky to have had two men like that to work with.

Just how competitive are the two guys? Are they competitive about everything or just about you/Christy?

LAUREN: If you think David and Neil are competitive, you should see James and Stewart in action! They had so much fun topping each other and stirring things up. Sometimes I don't think they even knew I was alive.

Last question, Lauren. It's your turn to tell us one juicy thing that happened on set between MacNeill and Christy that we would never know if you didn't tell us.

LAUREN: Oh.... wouldn't YOU like to know?!

Stewart, do you think the difference in MacNeill's and Christy's ages ever comes into play in their relationship?

STEWART: Never, according to MacNeill.

What about you personally, Stewart--would you pursue a relationship with a young woman 15-20 years younger than you? Why or why not?

STEWART: Not unless she looks like Lauren! Ha! No, I am too young to do that--I think you should ask Michael Douglas this question.

Who do you feel is more of a romantic at heart MacNeill or Christy? How would you answer this question if I asked this instead about you or Lauren?

STEWART: I say Christy because MacNeill has such a practical side to him. MacNeill is romantic, plenty romantic but because of his life experiences, it is hard to be a romantic when you are dealing with so many people dying. As for Lauren or me, I can't say. Really. I don't know.

What do you think is so appealing about Christy to MacNeill?

STEWART: The fact that she has a good heart. He loves her spirit. I think that he is in love with her spirit of defiance. She is refreshing to him.

What do you think is so appealing about MacNeill to Christy?

STEWART: He's exotic; completely not of her world. And she admires his integrity and dedication to his profession.

Which one of you is the most in real life like your character...is it Lauren like Christy or you, Stewart, like MacNeill?

STEWART: I would say neither of us. Based on Christy's naiveté, I don't think Lauren is like Christy at all in real life. Lauren is more worldly. And as for me, because I live in the 21st century and am more of an artist, I think Mac and I are very different. Mac's world is not very modern, and he is much more practical and far less a creative type.

Stewart, what is the most MacNeill-like thing you have ever personally done?

STEWART: I operated on my cat once. He had been in a fight with a bobcat and he lost. He had been badly bitten and crawled off somewhere and was lying with these really awful festering wounds. So I operated on him. Of course my ex, who is a doctor, was there at the time. But we opened the cat's wounds up so they could drain and flushed them out. And he made it. It was fascinating. It saved his life. Another time I saved a hummingbird's life. It was trying to get out of my kids' school. It was banging up against the sky light, and I rescued it. And it was lying there near death. The children at the school were traumatized from seeing it near death. But using a syringe of sugar water that I put down its beak, I rejuvenated it and it flew out of my hand. A very profound thing.

What is it about Christy that you feel caused two such different men to fall in love with her?

STEWART: She's the only game in town? Seriously, she appeals to both of them on so many levels.

So is Christy a flirt?

STEWART: No. Not as much as she should be!

Did it seem fair to you that she seemed to keep both the men dangling as if she was trying to keep her options open and not commit?

STEWART: It's fair if you think of David & MacNeill as masochists.

Do you think she drove MacNeill to distraction with this?

STEWART: Are you kidding?!!

If Christy were your best friend or sister, what advice would you give her about handling these two men and also about deciding which man to choose?

STEWART: Leave town now; it can only get worse! Head for Asheville.

Have you read much of the Christy fan fiction on the web?

STEWART: No, I have not.

Does it surprise you that starting back with the fans of the original series and continuing today, more than 90% of it pairs up Christy with MacNeill?

STEWART: No, not really because that is the flow of the book. Well, it does surprise me on some levels but then when you consider the book, it doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that anyone finds this curmudgeon-like character appealing.

Now let's talk about the issue that is paramount to this web site: swooning. First, Stewart, what is your definition of swooning?

STEWART: (laughing wickedly). I will tell you this, it means a whole different thing in Australia!

How often does MacNeill make Christy swoon?

STEWART: In an hour or in a day?

That often, huh? OK. So how often do you think Christy affects MacNeill in the same way?

STEWART: Just as much if not more.

Describe the kind of things she/he does that makes the other react in such a way.

STEWART: She smiles. He smiles back.

What are your favorite swoony moments between MacNeill and Christy?

STEWART: In the TV series definitely fishing by the river in "The Road Home." In "Return To Cutter Gap" I would have to say the scene in the barn. I call this one another scene with Duke my camera loving horse. I say that because you know he nudged Lauren out of a scene once to put his big head in there. I am not sure if it was this exact scene, but it was one where she was petting him, and he just pushed her with his head so he could be right in front of the camera.

So, how is it to kiss Christy?

STEWART: Beautiful, sweet and sublime. Every thing MacNeill would have ever wanted and more.

Ohh, that's really nice! Does Christy respond well to MacNeill's kisses?

STEWART: He doesn't know. He needs more experience.

Does it annoy MacNeill to watch David kissing on Christy?

STEWART: I would say it devastates him more than annoys.

Oh wow! Well, here is your chance...tell that boy off now.

STEWART: No MacNeill doesn't blame David. He doesn't feel ill of him. MacNeill wouldn't do this. He might tell David off because he doesn't have a reality grip sometime. David's problem is that he doesn't understand the people. But Mac can't tell him off about Christy. That's because he feels sorry for David. He is in the same boat as Mac so there is a certain camaraderie there about that in a way.

For the sake of this discussion, let's say that Christy is to marry MacNeill and PAX springs for the couple to have a honeymoon trip. Where would you like them to go?

STEWART: Scotland. Stay in a big castle somewhere up in the Scottish highlands with a trout stream nearby and a nice little pub down the road. In the summer when it's not raining. And with a beautiful four-poster bed across from a roaring fire.

If MacNeill and Christy get married, do you think that they will argue much when married?

STEWART: All the time.

Tell us what you predict their first argument as a married couple will be about.

STEWART: How to cook the eggs.

And which one of them do you think will more than likely be the one who tries to make up first?

STEWART: I don't know.

If MacNeill marries Christy, will it be easier or harder to come back in a new series or new movies this year and play this character, why or why not.

STEWART: I would say the same. It all requires putting on MacNeill and dealing with MacNeill's perspective. It is not an easy thing either way. It's just an acting challenge. However, if Mac marries Christy, then his dreams come true but due to the reality of being married, their lives will be much more intertwined and therefore complicated.

If you never got to play this character again, what is the one thing you would miss the most about the role?

STEWART: The fantasy. I would miss the romantic fantasy the most.

What is the thing you would miss the least?

Being away from my family for long periods of time. I don't like being away from my kids so much.

I am sure you have read/heard all the comments about the two of you (Lauren & Stewart) having such great chemistry together. Can you explain this chemistry and what it is that people see who say this?

STEWART: I don't know if I can explain this as well because I need a chalk board to show you this correctly. With chemistry the (LLS)+(SFM)=(L2S2FM). The two L's and the 2 S's cancel out and so this formula breaks down to FM, which equals Fair Match. Seriously, I would say that it is a spark that happens when two people are good at what they do and are enjoying themselves. As for why I think this is so I think it is partially because of our characters' chemistry and also partially because we are both willing as actors to laugh and enjoy the process.

What did you do differently in playing MacNeill this time than when you played him before?

STEWART: Not a thing. I played him exactly the same. OK. So maybe I brought some more experience as an actor to the role.

Finally, tell us one juicy thing that happened on set between MacNeill and Christy that we would never know if you didn't tell us.

STEWART: Let's see...I understand that Lauren has already told about the time we were in the hot tub together with all our clothes on. How about this? That I picked her up and carried her across the courtyard from the mission house to David Grantland's bunkhouse for the Christy photo shoot because we didn't want her to get muddy feet.

And then there is a scene in which I was supposed to kiss her, but as I had physical control of her at that time, I wouldn't let her stop. You'll know which scene when you see it. You will also see in the scene how well I was rewarded.

SHE'S THE NEXT/LA NOUVELLE CLAIRE DANES

"By the end of the shoot, it was like, Alright, we're naked again. Who cares?" says Vancouver-born Lauren Lee Smith about her star turn in the emotionally-charged film Lie With Me. Smith has become even more comfortable with nude scenes on Showcase's controversial show The L Word. "People will go see Quentin Tarantino films, which are incredibly violent, and they have no problem with that," says Smith. "But show a naked body and [they] freak out." Also look for Smith in the dramedy The Last Kiss with Scrubs star Zach Braff.

[Dana is sitting at a table, eating celery sticks and carrots. The waiter comes over and sets down a plate of lush vegetables and dips. Piano music plays in the background.]

Dana: I didn’t order that.

Waiter: I know. They’re from her. (Points)

[Dana looks over to where he’s pointing, which is the kitchen. Lara Perkins, sous-chef, smiles at her. Dana looks up the waiter]

Waiter: Lara Perkins, our sous-chef.

Dana: Soup chef?

Waiter: (chuckles) Yeah. Right.

[The waiter walks off. Dana looks over at Lara, then back at her plate, then back at Lara. Lara looks up, and Dana immediately turns around. With a self-satisfied grin, she digs in.]

[Dana lays across the bench and sights. Lara comes in and goes to her locker to change.]

Lara: Hey! You okay?

[Dana sits up suddenly. She turns around to see Lara, but sees that Lara is changing, so turns back around.]

Dana: Uh…I’m fine! (Chucking) I’m fine. That was my agent. He, uh, he just told me Subaru might want to use me for an ad campaign. So, uh, they’re gonna watch me train tomorrow.

[Dana sneaks a peek back at Lara, who is in a t-shirt, but quickly turns back around. Dana is jittery and excited.]

Dana: Which is so cool.

[Dana rolls her eyes at herself]

Lara: Yeah! That’s….that’s so exciting!

Dana: Yeah, yeah it is. It is, kinda. I mean, you know, I can’t mess up. So.

[Dana closes her eyes and breathes in slowly. Lara puts on a fresh jacket.]

Lara: I’m sure you won’t. Um. You can turn around, now. My jacket’s back on.

[Dana giggles.]

Lara: My job is so messy. I have to change, like, three times a day.

Dana: Yeah? You always look nice when I see you.

[Lara looks at Dana.]

Dana: I mean….I mean, you never look dirty.

[Dana chuckles uneasily. Lara smiles.]

Dana: When I see you.

[Dana turns around and makes a face as if she’s about to explode.]

Dana: (standing) I gotta go. I – I have to – I have to go.

Lara: Listen, why don’t you come by later? I’ll send something down for you.

Dana: (excited) Okay. Yeah!

Lara: Great.

Dana: Thank you.

Lara: Bye.

Dana: Bye.

[Dana walks off, then returns and pick up her duffle bag.]

Dana: (snap) Bag. (grins) Bye.

Lara: Bye.

Tina: (whispering to Dana) Pretend you don’t know us!

[Dana tires to look nonchalant.]

Shane: (smiling) Dana, May I sit with you? (sits) So which one is she?

[Dana discreetly points. Shane turns to see Lara in the kitchen, in her chef’s uniform.]

Shane: Wow. Very nice, Dana.

[Dana gives Shane a look.]

Shane: No! I’m here for you. I’m here for you.

[Shane flips open her cell phone. Alice puts her earbud in her ear and reads the display on her phone. She looks up at Lara, who is busy in the kitchen and hasn’t notice them.]

[Bette flips open her cell phone and puts it to her ear. Alice talks discreetly into her phone mic.]

Alice: (phone) it’s the redhead.

Bette: (to Tina) it’s the cute redhead.

[Tina nods]

[Alice looks at Lara and busily takes notes. A shot of Lara’s shoes.]

Alice: (phone) Kitchen shoes. Neutral.

Tina: (whispering) Look at the earrings.

[Lara continues working.]

Bette: Hoops, Hard to read.

[Lara glances up toward Bette and Tina.]

Tina: (to Bette) Oh, quick! Kiss me!

[Bette and Tina grab each other and kiss feverishly for several moments. Shane grins. Dana’s eye bulge.]

Dana: (through clenched teeth) God, what are you doing!

[Lara seems to notice, but looks back down at what she’s doing. Alice notes Lara’s reaction. The people at the table behind Bette and Tina are in various stages of freaking out. Dana puts her hand to her face and sighs.]

[Shane flips open her phone and puts it to her ear.]

Alice: (phone) Abort.

Shane: (closing phone) (to Dana) Allright, I’ll be back.

[Bette, Tina, Alice and Shane head into the bathroom and stand in a group by the sinks. Alice reads from the notes she made. Classical music plays in the background.]

Alice: Allright, So far, it’s neck-and-neck.

Bette: Well, she’s got some good lezzie points for her walk, and the way she moves that chopping knife.

Shane: Yeah, but she’s way femmy on the coiffure tip.

Alice: Yeah, and her reaction to the two of you kissing was split because she didn’t freak out which was a good sign, but she hardly paid and attention.

Tina: Yeah, but you guys, she’s got 9 in the lez column and she only has 7 in the straight.

Alice: Yeah, but the margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Bette: You know what we have to do.

[Tina, Bette and Alice all slowly turn to face Shane. Shane gives them a wary look.]

INT. - COUNTRY CLUB - RESTAURANT - DAY

[Shane walks up to the kitchen window and clears her throat. Lara is sharpening knives a couple of feet away.]

Shane: Hi.

Lara: (learning over to see Shane) I’m sorry?

Shane: I was just wondering if you had those, uh...y’know, those – those…(gesturing) sweet little figs.

Lara: Oh, I know what you mean, I love figs. Um, unfortunately they’re out of season right now.

Shane: (puppy dog eyes) Oh, they are? Well, then, uh….

[Lara glances over toward Dana, Bette and Tina, who are all watching Shane.]

Shane: (smoothly) I don’t know, I was wondering if you just, I don’t know, if you could recommend something else. I just kinda have that…

Lara: Um…well, sometimes we have these champagne truffles for dessert, but, not today.

[Shane starts at Lara seductively, but Lara does not seem to be taking the bait.]

Shane: Hm.

Lara: Um. (Smiles) That’s what all that comes to mind.

[Alice watches the exchange.]

Shane: (smiling) and that’s it?

Lara: (nods) Yeah, that’s it’

Shane: (nods) Allright. Thank you.

[Shane heads back to Dana’s table.]

INT. - COUNTRY CLUB - LOCKER ROOM

[Lara closes her locker. On her way out, she runs into Dana, in a robe, fresh from the showers.]

Lara: Hey!

Dana: Hi!

Lara: So, did you hear from Subaru? Did you get it?

Dana: (blushing) I did.

Lara: Oh, my god, that’s fantastic! I knew you would.

[Dana giggles]

Lara: Well, they’re lucky to have you.

Dana: (smiling) Oh, thanks.

Lara: Well. Um…goodnight.

Dana: Goodnight.

[Dana turns around to her locker to open it, but Lara returns. Lara backs Dana against her locker and kisses her.]

Lara: (smiling) Just in case you were still wondering.

Lauren Update: Intelligence

Lauren will be appearing as the undercover operative Tina in the second episode of the new CBC show Intelligence, which airs Tuesday nights at 9 pm. The show's synopsis from the official website:

Intelligence is conspiratorial, clandestine, dangerous, seductive and volatile, full of betrayals and reprisals on both sides.

As the season begins, third generation gangster Jimmy Reardon and Director of Vancouver's Organized Crime Unit Mary Spalding have made deals with the devil, that is, Jimmy has made the deal to work with Mary Spalding as a star informant, and Mary has made the deal to provide Reardon with protection from prosecution. Each will attempt to use the other without getting caught in the act.

Reardon works with a treacherous gang of cut-throat dope dealers, pimps, thieves, and addicts including his right-hand man Ronnie Delmonico, his ex-wife Francine and brother Michael. While Jimmy and Ronnie struggle to keep their people in line and out of jail, Spalding has her hands full dealing with a clutch of errant, power hungry intelligence agents eager to see her fail and their own careers advance. Heading this voracious pack is her immediate underling, veteran agent and loose cannon, Ted Altman who is working to take over her job at the Organized Crime Unit (OCU) and prevent her promotion to head the west division of CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service).
